Objectives

This course will enable HEFCE delegates to write clear, effective executive summaries and consultation documents using concise, engaging writing techniques. The focus is on making complex information accessible using the best sentence and paragraph structures, writing with authority while meeting specific readers' needs, and complementing text with visual techniques to make the most compelling use of data and statistics.

Pre-requisites

Some writing experience is useful, but this course is for any HEFCE delegates who want to build confidence in their ability to write clear, concise and engaging copy, with emphasis on the desired outcomes for specific audiences

Developing a Writing ‘Voice’

  • Assessing the voice of HEFCE
  • How to create a tone of authority in your writing
  • Working with a style guide

Writing to Your Reader

  • Building a picture of your audience
  • Choosing the words and structures that will grab them
  • Knowing the reactions and responses you want from your writing
  • Making your writing interactive: Infographics and other ways to visualise complex content
  • Practical Writing
  • Breaking messages down into clear elements
  • Tips for clear expression: sentence and paragraphs
  • Making complex information accessible: examples of copy that successfully targets different audiences
  • The benefits of plain English: the skill of being engaging, yet concise and to the point

Structure

  • How to plan content for maximum impact
  • The inverted pyramid structure versus linear writing
  • Building a strategy for best practice

Exercises:

  • Delegates will develop a proposition for an executive summary into a plan, using material provided
  • Delegates will write a 300-word executive summary, demonstrating the theories and techniques discussed during the course, and received individual feedback
